BCCI recommends Gambhir for Arjuna Award; will ensure he gets it.
BCCI has recommended opener Gautam Gambhir and women’s team captain Jhulan Gosawmi for the prestigious (?) national sports honor - the Arjuna Awards.
BCCI is demeaning these awards. Yes Gambhir has had a phenomenal year. Is that enough for you to get the prestigious sports honor? Let him continue to contribute in similar way consistently and then recommend him or anyone else.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni was awarded highest sporting honor - the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna - last year. What are his contributions to Indian sports? Winning a Twenty20 world cup? Was that not a team performance? He is average test player and good ODI wicketkeeper-batsman.
Mind you, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble have been recommended but have not been honored. What greater contribution has MSD has done to deserve this honor?
These young cricketers don’t respect the awards much. Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh - conferred with the Padmashree this year — skipped the award-giving ceremony.
Great lobbying happens for these awards. BCCI with its power and money gets its way. So, don’t be surprised if Gambhir gets the award.
I will be happy for him, but there are many other sports persons who deserve it more than Gambhir
PS: Indian Government might be little pissed off with cricketers no show- and might think twice honoring them with these frequent awards.
