Golden Oldies !

In one single phase of IPL-II, all the talk about twenty20 being young man’s game has ceased. That is how fickle the media is and the experts are. They switch their allegiance in a flash and talk about these things as if they knew it before anyone.

Cricket for me has always been about skills. Batting, Bowling and fielding. Yes temperament, mental toughness plays a role. Technology, Support staff, laptops do help. They are not replacement for the pure talent and skills.

What golden oldies as I call them have proved is, they are a game for any format. Its cause they have the basic skill called batting. They know what works for them and what does not. They have honed their skills over years.

They must have been itching to prove a thing or two to the generation-Y about cricket. Sachin’s statement “ I or Rahul does not play the game to prove anything to anyone” not withstanding. How well they have proved, if there was anything was left to.

Gilchrist, Gibbs, Sachin, Hayden and Rahul, all have turned it on in this edition. Their stats compare favorably with any young batting sensation of this generation.

Player Mat Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50 4s 6s
ML Hayden 4 215 65 53.75 132 162.87 0 2 28 6
HH Gibbs 4 183 69* 91.5 133 137.59 0 2 18 6
AB de Villiers 4 176 105* 88 117 150.42 1 1 10 7
KC Sangakkara 5* 165 60 41.25 148 111.48 0 1 14 3
SR Tendulkar 4* 164 68 54.66 127 129.13 0 2 16 6
AC Gilchrist 4 163 71 40.75 95 171.57 0 1 16 11
CH Gayle 5 147 44* 36.75 119 123.52 0 0 11 10
R Dravid 4 144 66 36 106 135.84 0 1 15 3
RS Bopara 5* 138 84 27.6 119 115.96 0 1 8 7
YK Pathan 4 125 62* 41.66 78 160.25 0 1 12 8

In the Top 10 run getter so far, 5 or older than 35 years. Sangakkara is 31 and Gayle is touching 30. So it leaves only 3 players who are under 30.

Take a bow to the maestros who have entertained us and also taught few lessons along the way to us and those who suck most, sitting and making stupid statements in cozy comforts of commentary boxes.
