Government acts tough after being snubbed by cricketers

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh had snubbed Padma Shri awards last Wednesday. Government issued a notification that National sports awards, like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Dhronacharya and Dhyan chand, will be withdrawn if the recipient is absent from the ceremony without intimation.

Circular implies that awardee, has to be present in person to receive the award from the President. And nothing else would do. Any awardee if unable to attend must provide intimation to the ministry in advance.

Alternative arrangements will be made to let him receive the award from the sports minister. In case there is no prior intimation is provided and awardee does not turn up the award will be withdrawn.

It’s a national honor being bestowed upon these cricketers, which other sports person do not get easily. It does not surprise me that they don’t respect these awards. Bestowing these honors to cricketers like Harbhajan Singh devalues the award itself.

He is controversy’s favorite child and does not set up a good example for any one to follow. I hope some sense prevails over these awards and politics is rooted out of the nominations.

I am not even discussing about similar awards being bestowed upon some Bollywood stars.

But, we can debate on who devalues the awards more? Cricketers like Harbhajan Singh or bollywood stars?
