IPL Vs Country ?
Is the cash rich IPL making players choose it over country? If recent reports hold any water, then it seems players are more concerned about being available to participate in IPL than playing for their country.
Jacob Oram is an example. He is nursing injury to participate in IPL starting April 18th. He was not part of on going test series against India. Is he cotton-wooling himself for IPL? No one knows for sure.
IPL has opened money doors for cricketers. It gives Indian and international cricketers opportunity to make huge sums of money. It’s allowing a re-rating of cricketers for their abilities to perform in the instant cricket that’s ruling the cricket world now.
Shane Warne went to an extent of saying that ICC and all international cricket boards should free up calendar to ensure every single international player is able to participate in IPL. Also says no one should try and replicate the IPL. .
Sri Lankan board and players were at war for not being able to participate in IPL. There is a conflict of interest between West Indies Cricket Board and West Indies Players Association, over participation in IPL. West Indies cricket board has agreed for the England tour which conflicts with the IPL. West Indies was not originally scheduled to tour England though. They are replacing Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka cricket board had withdrawn from tour to allow its players to play in IPL.
Exceptions in Stuart Broad, Mitchell Johnson and Ponting exist, but they represent a minority. Host of other players are putting IPL before their country. I don’t blame them. After all they pseudo represent the country. They are contracted by the respective cricket boards, which are not affiliated to governments.
