When Indian movie awards are hosted in Dubai and Singapore, Why not IPL?

Moving IPL to South Africa is not the incompetence of the government as some people made it to be. It is about getting your priorities right. In this case both the parties involved got their priorities right. For Govt. Of India, Elections take precedence. The last thing they want is a lax in security for either the elections or the matches.

For BCCI, hosting the tournament is paramount. It really doesn’t matter where. Only the Kolkata stadium has a capacity of 90,000 or more. So, for any given match only a maximum of 90,000 will be seeing it from the stadium and the rest will be watching it on TV.

Next argument is - the local economy is affected. Is it really? If you look at it, it is not affected after all. The only thing which is happening is transfer of wealth.

Now, Sriram goes to a match and pays 500 rupees for the ticket. Sriram has just lost 500 rupees and Shah Rukh (oops stadium) gets the 500 rupees. Is that fair? It is because Sriram want to see the match in the stadium and he is ok to spend that money.

There is no match to go to the stadium for. What would Sriram do? He keeps his 500 with him and maybe buys a branded underwear. What about the other fellas who are selling Kurkure? Yeah this would hit them seriously. Now they cannot charge 50 rupees for a 10 rupee kurkure can they? So, suck on that.

Let’s not get all emotional about and think for a second. IPL is a mix of business and cricket with loads of entertainment. How does it matter where the tournament is hosted? The reason it is called IPL is because it originated in India.

No one loves cricket as much as Indians do. India has loads of money to spend on it. Lalit Modi and everyone else just cashed on that emotions. It is time India leaves the emotion and watch cricket just as a game.

Who will lose?

Hotels and other services which depend on a seasonal surge for their business. But again this is nothing but transfer of wealth.

Who will win?

The rest of course. But, to be specific, the audience. Now, they don’t have to go to the stadium and spend the money. Instead they can save that money for a rainy day and watch it on the TV. Isn’t that a good thing for a recession ridden economy?

The multiplexes and movie theaters are just ecstatic about the whole thing. Can you blame them? IPL with its 3 hour format, is just eating into their timings and profits.

3 arguments against IPL moving out are - nationalism, affect on local economy and emotion are down. Now, let me ask the question again. When Indian movie awards are hosted in Dubai and Singapore, Why not IPL?

PS : In this consumerist driven society of ours, not having IPL in India is one less thing to worry about.
