How much money does Dhoni make?
Just by looking at television and print commercials M.S.Dhoni appears, it is easy to guess M.S. Dhoni is the richest cricket star.
MSD brand, on a conservative estimate is worth around 300 crore.He charges around 5 crores for a deal per year. As of now he endorses approximately 19 brands. It makes 95 crores per year and each of these deals run into 3 years. So its around 285-300 crores. Also note not all these contracts run for 3 years. Pepsi and Reebok contracts are for 10 years. Both together are worth 100 crore. If exclusivity is needed for these brands they pay more to the BOSS.
Mind you, all these are base prices. Incentives add more cash flow, when he scores a hundred or reaches a milestone. Base prices do not get affected if he is injured, dropped or not playing due to various reasons. Its only the performance based incentives which get dropped.
What appeal he possesses, making him darling of masses and in turn of brands?
- Rags to riches story : He comes from poor family from a small town Ranchi.
- Captain: Being successful captain adds.
- Ability to connect to masses: Not a natural talent. Succeeded by grit and hard-work. I cant relate to Sachin, Shewag or Yuvaraj though I adore them.They are natural talents,
- Represents youth: He is more attuned to youth of today. Youth loves his sense of humor, living life to fullest. Poker faced funny answers in interviews.
You can go on and on.Question is, is he really worth it ? I don’t think so. But I am happy for him or for any sportsman. Their careers are short and let them ride the wave and make money.

What is appealing about Dhoni is his temperament and unflappability. It’s really a challenge to be a wicket keeper batsman and now add to that the responsibility as a captain of the team. He is remarkably cool compared to his contemporaries. But the fact remains that Dhoni is just carrying forward what his predecessors have built. If the team today is a nonparochial Indian team, credit goes to players like Ganguly, Dravid and Kumble. Three captains and John Wright promoted a well knit team which Dhoni has carried forward.
Dhoni has been lucky; he has not been tested in tough environment. Twenty20 is a tukka (gamble) where luck also plays a part. Two-three months down the line, if Dhoni fails to perform, Brand Dhoni will also collapse.
He endorses my earlier views made here that Dhoni is most lucky cricketer and his true test is yet to come. For Indian crickets success, let him continue to be lucky.
