South Africa = Chokers

GS Graeme Smith made a statement that South Africa are not chokers anymore, after winning the test series in Australia. I was not convinced then and I am not convinced now.

South Africa could have dispelled Australia from throne had they won the 3rd test at Sidney. They lost it in way reminiscent of their earlier debacles in big moments. Now they had the best chance to defeat Australia at home and announce to the world that they are here to rule test cricket.

What transpired is two losses in as many matches and a home series loss. Aussies avenged their home loss and so ruthlessly. They deserve the top spot more than anyone else. They were under too much pressure for making wrong moves and not able to win from strong positions at home against South Africa and in India.

All those doubts have been laid to rest in a emphatic manner. Old wounds they had inflicted continuously over a long period on South Africa  have been re-opened.

South Africa have choked again at what was their big moment. Its a familiar thing. I could not help  feeling a sense of deja vu all over again. They let the golden chance of becoming top test nation slip away.1999 world cup semifinals, 2003 knock out at home and many more would be etched in memory when you talk choking and South Africa. The only time they did not choke was in 1992 final, but the weather had other plans then.

For all talent, hard-work and professionalism South Africa will always be remembered for being chokers. Perennial chokers.

Will the come out of it in the coming T20 Championship?
