Aussies, still numero uno !
Aussies beat South Africa by 175 runs in the second test and take the series.
Aussies lost a test series at home after a long time early this year, which set many tongues wagging, including mine. End of Aussie dominance, was what many cricket experts concluded. They won the Sidney test and retained the top position.
Why was everyone ready to write of Australia so quickly? I was always skeptical. It was hard to believe how such a strong structure and sporting culture could not produce pretty good cricketers consistently, if not greats !.
My skepticism has turned true. Some smart thinking by selectors. And newly blooded players have outshone their more illustrious colleagues. How handsomely have have they paid off. Had they got rid of Hayden earlier may be they might not have lost home series at all. ![]()
Mitchell Johnson seems to be on his way to be a fantastic bowler. 300 plus test wicket bowler. Philipp Hughes, diminutive player has more than filled the shoes of Mathew Hayden. Think what would a fit and hungry Bret Lee would do to this side. Sure his pride has been hurt with all that has happened in last six months. We are not talking about Stuart Clark, Andrew Symonds as yet.
There are holes, big ones. No good spinner, Simon Katich might fill it pretty well. Now who cares if they can win with all those shortcomings against South Africa in their own den? India are yet to conquer foreign lands more convincingly and South Africa should show that last summer was no flash in pan.
Its Aussies baggy green which is still ruling the test cricket.
Two fantastic tests, back to back. This is what test cricket is all about. A true test of batsman, bowler and a fieldsman.
Thank you Australia and South Africa for providing a great contest in the recent memory.
