Will Cricket Die due to terrorism?
Will terrorism cripple cricket so much, it will cease to exist as an international sport? Can you imagine it? We might be standing at cusp of history here. Full stadiums might be only seen in pictures like this.
Can cricket be called as an international sport? What qualifies any sport to be international?
I don’t know majority of those criteria, but for sure being played by majority of nation helps.
Football, Golf, Tennis. Cricket is being played by 10 countries, 4-5 out of which are languishing without much talent or structure. So how can a game (irrespective of being played over a century) played by 5 good teams qualify to be international?
Another way to look at it is, how many people follow it ? Think about Tennis, though its played over 100 countries if you put together all tennis viewers one side and Indian cricket followers one side, you know which side balance will tilt. That in itself can be one criteria.
Lets get back to cricket’s future. Now its too risky playing cricket in sub-continent. if there is no cricket played in subcontinent mainly India, cricket as a sport is in danger of ceasing to be a financial viability. You can’t sell cricket when India is playing Sri Lanka in England
.
Its a big no no. I cant remember many spectators watching Australia-Pakistan series when it was held in Sri Lanka and later in Sharjah. No one will watch it and slowly subcontinent viewers and followers will start loosing interest as you can’t passionately follow a sport when its not being played in your own backyard.
It will start with dwindling of interests and other sports might use it for their advantage and thrive. Cricket seems to be poised for a downhill ride in near future. For cricket to survive it has to thrive in subcontinent and more so in India
Lets hope necessary steps will be taken and whole idea discussed is too far fetched. If it happens everyone will be glad.
