IPL- Indian Problems League?
IPL is in problems galore - courtesy global recession. Here are few pointers to begining of what might turn out to be a full blown issue coming days.
-
Rajasthan Royals yet to finalize sponsors - Their contract with Bajaj Allianz is down in dumps.
-
HDIL has pulled out of contract with KKR- Kolkata Knight Riders.
-
Deccan Chargers have lost team sponsor - Jaypee group.
-
BIG TV has pulled out of sponsorship deal worth $ 31.1 million as updated earlier.
-
Pepsi deal of $2.5 million annually has been decentralized. Pepsi is free to find a franchise of its own. Pepsi had its on-ground contract. Coca-Cola has now on-air deal which means exclusive visibility on TV.
-
There is league V/s Franchise issues. The eight franchises get to divide among themselves, on an annual basis, 72% from the sale of IPL’s media rights and 54% from the league’s central sponsorship pool. Any aborted league level deal hits franchises hard like Big TV one.
-
Dollar value has risen against Rupee. Almost 25% of what it was last year. Hence operating costs, hiring foreign players all add up.
This edition will be more cricket than glamour & glitz. Dumbed down version devoid of hypes and frills that came in plenty last year. You might see more dances from SRK, Shilpa Shetty & Preity than cheerleaders to ensure more crowd. I doubt common man will spend time and money on these to go to stadium and watch.
I would watch it in comforts of home.
