Vijay Mallya acts like a kid in a candy store
After firing Charu Sharma for the team’s dismal performance, Royal Challengers owner Vijay Mallya takes a potshot at Rahul Dravid. He alleges that Charu Sharma and Rahul Dravid has completely ignored his list of players and made their own choices. Mallya also alleges that his friends used to say that the Challengers team is a test team in T20 jersey. Mallya admits that might be true. When Mallya questioned the poor performance of the team Charu Sharma always came up with an excuse. Sharma’s list of excuses were :
- Poor infrastrucuture and lack of practice facilities.
- No bonding in the team.
That is Mallya’s version. Now here my version.
I hate this incident on several different accounts:
- Vijay Mallya is paying the money for the team and for the players. So he is paying for Charu Sharma and Rahul Dravid. That means he can say whatever he wants and can get it done. This is the man who has merged Air Deccan with Kingfisher even though Capt.Gopinath rejected it in the first offer. He persisted and got that done and is now a majority stakeholder in Air Deccan (Deccan Aviation). Now if he can persist and influence someone like Gopinath who is his competitor, but he cannot influence Charu Sharma who works for him. Somehow, I find that very hard to believe.
- Let us assume that Charu Sharma and Rahul Dravid ignored Mallya’s list and gone ahead with their list. Now, crying foul about it and firing Charu Sharma and putting Dravid under a lot of pressure is not going to solve any problems. Instead, it will pile up the problems and that is evident in the team’s performance against Kings XI Punjab. Dravid is under a lot of pressure. Mallya’s act of complaining like a school kid when things went haywire is despicable.
- Hypothetically, if the team was doing good and is in the second place and need one more win to find its spot in semi-finals. Would Mallya had fired Sharma and rebuked Dravid? Answer would be no.
Lessons learnt : When you are a CEO do not appoint one more CEO to do that job for you. In case you appoint a CEO let him do whatever he is supposed to and keep your mouth shut. Firing a CEO or a captain in the middle of the tournament do not serve any real purpose. It only feeds the media channels and newspapers. Of course, blogs like this.
PS : Dr.Mallya had a good deal anyway. He is the owner of a team. His brand Kingfisher is on the shirts of umpire’s and 3 different teams. His brand Royal Challenge is on the shirts of the bangalore team. He got his product advertised like never before. Above all, just because supereme court ruled in your favor does not mean you are right. Whatever you are doing is still surrogate advertisement. You are still promoting liquor. Now, you want to promote your busines (liquor) and win the tournament too. That is too much to ask for $110 million. Sorry Dr.Mallya you cannot have it all.
